These past two years, the COVID-19 crisis has seen so many of our school’s annual events and activities fall by the wayside. The annual Interschools clash between Union and Volkskool being the most notable one.
This year, however, we just couldn’t go another year without hosting one of Union’s most treasured annual events, the White Scarf Ceremony.
Because we love it.
Traditionally held during Union Preparatory School’s annual Interschools’ Assembly, the White Scarf Ceremony sees Union’s 1st team rugby and hockey players being presented with a commemorative white scarf to mark their service to the school on the sports field.
After foregoing the event last year due to Covid-19 concerns, arrangements were made to realise the event this year – albeit a bit differently than usual. Early Friday morning, 6 August, on what would have been Interschools’ Friday, the event was held on Union’s Puggy Munnik Field as an open-air ceremony.
The players’ arrival saw them being cheered on by droves of Prep School learners, whereafter beautiful speeches, a stunning rendition of ‘Union’s Call’ by Mrs Edwardine Abader and the respective war cries ensued. The players were then individually called to the stage to be presented with their white scarves by their parents.
Union Preparatory School is extremely grateful that this event could be held and thank all those who attended as well as those who worked tirelessly beforehand to ensure the success of the event.
Seen here are some of the special moments captured on the day. The download link for the ceremony’s photos was made available to the coaches and players following the event, however, should any learner or parent still need to get the photos, they can contact Mrs Mariëtte Burger at Union High School at email@example.com
