SHREK

On Thursday and Friday evening, 22 and 23 August, Union High School’s hall was swamped by parents, grandparents, staff and fairytale creatures who were all there to watch Union Preparatory School much-anticipated biennial play.

This year’s play, titled “Shrek”, told the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre, portrayed by Khazimla Mbulawa, who goes on a life-changing adventure through a kingdom filled with fairytale misfits in order to reclaim the deed to his land.

Joined by a wisecracking donkey (Elizabeth Houseman), this unlikely hero fights a fearsome dragon (Aimee Short), rescues the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona (ZoΓ« Hobson), and learns that real friendship and true love are not only found in fairy tales.

Full of songs, great dancing and an important message about acceptance and following your heart, Union’s play was part romance, part twisted fairytale and a whole lot of fun for everyone!

Well done to all the learners of Union Preparatory School for portraying the fantastical creatures so excellently.

A special word of thanks is also extended to stage director, Ms. Leona Rich, music director, Mrs. Alet Kingwill, Mrs. Corrie Potgieter for the excellent script, Mrs. Avrille PΓΌtter and the UPS teachers for their assistance with the choreography, Union High School for the use of the hall and sound, Mrs. Mel Houseman who created the beautiful backdrop as well as all the parents who so willingly gave of their time and expertise.
