During the 1st term of 2020, the Grade 4 Social Sciences lesson plan saw the school’s Grade 4s learning more about their local history.
As an academic enrichment activity, the learners were all taken on an excursion to some of Graaff-Reinet’s historical sites on 7 and 8 March.
This outing saw the learners venture all over Graaff-Reinet, visiting one place of interest after another, learning all sorts of historical facts about Graaff-Reinet.
Mrs Anziske Kayster facilitated the tour and guided the learners through all the different museums Graaff-Reinet has to offer.
Other places of interest visited by the learners, included the Graaff-Reinet Dutch Reformed Church, the Graaff-Reinet Club, The Drostdy Hotel, the Old Residency and the Reinet House.
To add an extra element of fun, the learners were met by actors (local history buffs) along the way, who took on various characters to explain and demonstrate what life was like way back when…
The Grade 4s were very impressed and intrigued by all the different characters and enjoyed meeting them!
Union Preparatory School would like to thank Mrs Kayster, the actors, and the Graaff-Reinet Museum Complex for accommodating the learners and making it such a memorable experience for all of them.
A word of thanks must also go to Ms Amor May for taking the photographs and accompanying the Grade 4s and to Mr Melvin Kitchu for transporting the learners safely up and down the streets of Graaff-Reinet.
