Local pigeon fancier, Mr Garth Heunis, gave a talk on pigeons and pigeon racing to learners at Union Preparatory School earlier today (Thursday, 7 November).
[Pigeon racing is the sport of releasing specially trained racing pigeons, which then return to their homes over a carefully measured distance.]
Mr Heunis’ love and passion for the sport was evident as he enthusiastically shared his knowledge and stories acquired through his years of pigeon racing, with the children.
The boys and girls were fascinated by the talk and just loved hearing about the birds’ outstanding navigational abilities among other fascinating facts.
The learners were also able to watch as Mr Heunis released a group of his birds, that quickly took the skies, making their way back to their loft.
