Wild Karoo Fundraising Event

Friday evening’s 𝗪𝗜𝗟𝗗 𝗞𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗢 fundraising event – hosted by Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet at the Graaff-Reinet Club, was given added depth and meaning through the thoughtful welcoming address of 𝗠𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹, Chairman of the school’s Governing Body.

Drawing on the theme of the evening, Mr Kingwill reflected on the meaning of the Wild Karoo itself – a place so often described as vast, harsh and unforgiving, yet known by those who love it as something far more profound: a place of quiet strength, endurance and remarkable resilience.

𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗼, 𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘄 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. Like this region we call home, our school continues to stand firm through challenge, adapting, persevering and thriving with courage and purpose.

He spoke too of the “wild” – that untamed and spirited quality that speaks of character, boldness and the determination to keep moving forward, even in difficult times.𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿. In Mr Kingwill’s words, our schools are more than institutions; they are bastions of platteland values and enduring moral principles, places where character is formed, responsibility is instilled and young people are anchored in a way of life that strengthens families and communities far beyond the classroom.

𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 – not only for the education they provide, but for all that they represent in our town. Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet and indeed the Union Schools as a whole, play a vital role in the social and economic fabric of Graaff-Reinet. 𝘛𝘰 𝘴𝘶𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴; 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘢𝘳.

Mr Kingwill also reminded guests that evenings such as the Wild Karoo auction are about far more than the items up for bid. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 – the shared commitment, generosity and belief in what can be built when a community stands together. Every contribution made on the night was an expression of faith in the future of our learners and in the continued pursuit of excellence at the Union Schools.

It was a message of gratitude, but also of conviction. A reminder that even in changing and challenging times, the spirit of this school community refuses to be subdued. It continues to endure, to give and to stand strong.

And perhaps that is exactly what the Wild Karoo event has always symbolised: 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 – 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱.
