Union Preparatory School, Graaff-Reinet is extremely proud of our chess stars, siblings 𝗣𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼 and 𝗞𝗴𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘀𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗽𝗮, whose dedication and talent continue to impress.
During the December holidays, both learners competed individually in the 𝗠𝘇𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀, held from 15 to 20 December 2025 in Gqeberha. Paballo was also selected for the Eastern Cape u10A team, which placed second overall, earning her provincial colours.
𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘣𝘰𝘵𝘩 𝘗𝘢𝘣𝘪 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵𝘴𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘧𝘰𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱.
Since returning to school this year, they have continued to excel at trials, with Pabi (now u12) and Thatso (u10) both achieving top results and securing places in the Spartan Bishops 2026 SBD team for the 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 in Jeffreys Bay (1 to 3 May).
Pabi has also been selected for 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, taking place from 28 March to 2 April in the North West.
